Become an Ombudsman Volunteer!
Program Description Make a difference - volunteer as an Ombudsman now! The Salt Lake County Ombudsman Program provides help to adults, 60 years of age or older, who are living in long term care; such as nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Ombudsmen investigate reports of alleged inadequacy of care, violations of rights, abuse and neglect or exploitation of elderly residents. Volunteers advocate correcting problems individually and on a systemic level through mediation, education and collaboration with other state agencies responsible for enforcement.
Volunteer Opportuntities
Non-Certified Ombudsman Non-certified Ombudsman visit with elderly residents and report any possible complaints.

Requirements:
  • Complete extensive screening process
  • Complete 16 hours of training in addition to 4 hours of hands-on training
  • Excellent communication skills and enjoy working with seniors
  • No conflicts of interest – i.e. you can’t work in nursing homes and volunteer

Commitment:
  • 4 month minimum commitment
  • Average 2 hours a week after completing training
  • Complete paperwork in a timely manner and report to staff weekly
Certified Ombudsman After first serving as a non-certified Ombudsman, a certified Ombudsman is authorized to investigate complaints and implement resolutions.

Requirements:
  • Complete extensive screening process
  • Complete 40 hours of State Certification Training, including classroom and on-the-job training
  • Excellent communication skills and enjoy working with seniors
  • No conflicts of interest

Commitment:
  • One year minimum commitment
  • A minimum of 4 hours a week after completing training
  • Complete 24 hours on-going training annually to keep certification
  • Complete paperwork in a timely manner and report to staff weekly
